Yoga versus pilates, which modern practice do you prefer? Both claim to be beneficial for a host of physical and mental health conditions. Over the past twenty years, yoga has been pure medicine for my mind and body. I practice yoga daily to inspire my creativity and to release any tension from my body after a day of working in my office. I have only experienced pilates once or twice, so I have never experienced the real benefits of Pilates, just because I love my yoga journey too much. There are a few fundamental differences between the two practices.
WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates focuses on movements which require stabilising the back and core muscles. Breathwork included is initiated with the contraction of the core muscles. Equipment and your body weight provide resistance.

Lately, Barre Pilates has become very popular. Other types of Pilates which are trending at the moment are; Piloxing, Body Balance, Yogalates, Booty Barre, Xtend Barre. These are all exercise classes which have taken inspiration from the different types of contemporary, classical or clinical kind of Pilates.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PILATES?
Evidence suggests that pilates may be helpful for many conditions including back pain, joint injuries, arthritis, and urinary incontinence. Pilates helps with increasing muscle strength and improving flexibility, balance and posture.

Yoga is an ancient system, often thought of as multi-dimensional because you practice movement, breath awareness, breathing exercises, relaxation, concentration, self-inquiry and meditation. For some, yoga is an approach to life based on balance and harmony.

A few modified yoga and pilates poses are safe during pregnancy. It is essential to be guided by a qualified practitioner. Many pregnant ladies, find yoga offers them enormous relief for lower back pain.
WHAT ARE THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN YOGA AND PILATES?
Pilates focuses more on core strength without the chanting and ‘oming’. Yoga offers more of a holistic practise focusing on improving the power and flexibility of all your muscles in your body. Balance, endurance, strength, spirituality, relaxing and dynamic movements will give you all-over nourishment for your mind, body and soul.
WHICH PRACTISE IS BEST FOR YOU?
