Trends in food and restaurants are changing a lot. Customers are starting to move away from larger, fancier restaurants in favour of something a bit smaller. We think pop-up restaurants are hugely popular at the moment, and street food has seen a resurgence in general. More and more people are deciding to open up a small food truck instead of a proper restaurant for quite a few reasons. Location is one of the things that can make or break a restaurant, and if you get it wrong, you’re in a bit of a tricky situation. But with a food truck, you don’t have that problem.
A few established restaurants are also using food trucks as a way of expanding their reach and testing out their food in a new neighbourhood before committing to a new location. GET A TRUCK
You're not getting anywhere without the truck itself. You’ve got two options here; you can buy a cheaper truck that isn’t kitted out with cooking equipment and renovate it yourself. This is the cheaper option, but it’s going to take you some time and you’ll need a lot of specific skills to pull it off. If you do it that way, you can get a truck fairly cheap. If you aren’t confident that you can do a good job of it, you’ll be looking at spending somewhere between $25,000 and $80,000 depending on what cooking equipment you need in there. Remember, the danger with doing it yourself is that if things don’t meet safety standards, you can find yourself in trouble.
GET SOME POWER
The next thing to work out is how you’re going to power all of that stuff. There are lots of sites for pop-up restaurants around the country that often have their own powerpoints because they have a constant influx of trucks and small pop-ups. Then you’ll just need some gas to power the stove and the oven. However, when you’re doing events or finding your own spots, you’ll need to find a generator hire company. You could always buy your own generator but it’s expensive and when you aren’t using it for half the year, it’s a bit of a pain to carry around with you everywhere.
GET A NICHE
Street food has become so popular over the last couple of years, it seems like there are trucks everywhere. That means you’ve got to do something to make yourself stand out. Trying to sell burgers or hog roast is going to be difficult if there are ten other trucks doing the same nearby. People that buy from pop-ups and trucks are usually fairly inventive so you need to come up with an interesting niche to attract customers.
