Protein shakes on their own, aren’t an altogether bad idea, for those people who love the gym and require extra protein as a building block of their regime, they are great. The risks they pose to almost everybody are quite high.
Protein mixes generally contain a ton of sugar, and we mean a lot. Some of the most popular protein shakes can include up to 20 grams of sugar per shake. This means that per shake you could get up to 100 grams of sugar.
One of the scariest findings with protein powders of late was a study conducted by a group called Clean Label Project. The researchers in this study found arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and even some pesticide traces.
So before you pick up that protein shake, it’s always best to do some research.
The Ugly Ones
When it comes to the ugly ones, there is a lot to look out for. We are going to take a look at the worst of the worst below:

Has been known to change skin tone and cause kidney damage.
Although banned in 2001, it still lurks around on the internet. Comfrey has been known to cause excessive liver damage.
Although still popular for treating anxiety, the FDA cannot stress enough the dangers it poses to the liver.
